Credit tightening and data-center delays threaten the debt-funded AI boom behind the S&P 500. Junk-bond sales fell from $51B in September to $7B in October's first three weeks; CCC yields hit a four-year high, though quality firms still borrowed. Per S&P Global, 146 data-center projects were delayed or canceled, potentially weakening buildout credit. With 40% of the index in 10 names, this is dot-com and 2008 combined; stocks have not caught up, and even good firms may be sold. x.com 

Hyperscalers' incremental return on capital is cratering, so hard spending decisions are coming. In the June quarter, Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet grew LTM EBIT 20% but needed 38% more deployed capital, before token prices cratered and with much demand from non-self-sustaining OpenAI. Compute and models may become a utility-like commodity. Easing credit fears should make debt cheaper for neoclouds and other capital-heavy AI builders, allowing some of the hardest-hit infrastructure stocks to explode higher. Five-year CDS for CoreWeave, Oracle, Meta, Amazon and Nvidia peaked on October 26 and has since eased. Anthropic's S-1, AI infrastructure earnings and Oracle's investor day gave the debt market evidence of demand and returns. The S&P 500's concentrated, correlated AI exposure makes a large allocation too risky as rates rise. Higher rates could force data-center bondholders to sell AI equities; early AI use appears to be stagnating and unclear ROI may cap demand even if usage grows linearly. The hyperscalers' externally funded AI buildout is fragile: a small shock could unravel the whole thing. @JoTrader4 argues Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Oracle need outside capital because demand, commitments and backlog exceed what cash from older businesses can fund. The Fed's September 16 quarter-point hike affects the high-moat portfolio differently from the simple picture of borrowers paying more. Bond-rating companies are having record quarters because the AI building boom keeps borrowing whatever rates do, while brokers that should win get only a small bump. Hyperscaler debt issuance will squeeze the investment-grade credit market first, leaving corporate bonds devastated next year.
