AI and data centers now drive HDD demand, so Western Digital's long customer visibility suggests AI demand could last into 2030-31. CEO Irving Tan says the company has good visibility through 2030-31 across its seven top customers, with demand signals increasing over time. That adds to the case for durable demand, though the AI runway is an inference from the HDD outlook. x.com
Western Digital's earnings are climbing fast while demand doesn't stop and supply is a duopoly. EPS rose 28% quarter over quarter and operating margin reached 38.6%. The top of Q4 2026 guidance implies another 25% quarterly EPS jump; just one more jump of that size would make it a 25 P/E stock on 2027 earnings. x.com

Nearline bit demand normally grows 20-25% with some deflation, while AI data growth now exceeds 30%; HDD costs ~$0.02-$0.03/GB versus ~$0.25 for NAND. A supply response could compress Western Digital's pricing and margins, eroding its apparent cheapness. Its 2013-24 normalized earnings merit a look: even huge demand growth in other industries eventually drew supply and mediocre returns. A digestion/reset would hurt buy-and-hold investors, though the outcome is uncertain. Western Digital's margins are riding price increases that management sees lasting three to four more quarters. Price per terabyte rose 28% year on year while cost per terabyte falls less than 10%; December gross margin is guided to 60-61%. Western Digital is about to play catch-up with the memory space. It has lagged as Micron, Sandisk, Samsung and SK Hynix ride NAND, DRAM and HBM price spikes, because it rides capacity storage for AI data lakes, which is real demand but a different, slower-moving market. x.com
Toshiba's reported plan to expand hard-drive output makes Seagate's and Western Digital's pricing after 2027 much less certain. Their bull case leaned on all three HDD makers holding unit output flat; per Nikkei Asia, Toshiba will spend about ¥60B to double AI data-center HDD capacity by March 2028 and lift its share from just over 10% to 30%. AI's physical buildout looks set to last to 2030 and beyond because financing, memory supply and hyperscaler spending still point to sustained demand. Nebius has $3.5B in financing, IREN $2.4B at 9% and SPCX $40B for GPU equipment. SK hynix expects shortages through at least 2030 and Samsung says HBM4 is sold out; memory companies are making money with no sign of slowing. Google expects 2027 capex to rise significantly.
