AI's electricity shortfall creates a massive opportunity for companies solving the power bottleneck. Morgan Stanley estimates a 32 GW US data-center power shortfall by 2028. Constellation Energy and Vistra are nuclear names, Bloom Energy in fuel cells, GE Vernova in power generation and Eaton in grid infrastructure. x.comÂ
AI power generation is now all about deployment speed, with a shortfall of about 38 GW through 2028, of which only about 15 GW will be met by the grid, per Morgan Stanley. Bloom Energy looks pricey at about 82x earnings, but a bull case of about $25B of 2030 revenue implies $16.70+ EPS and $668 at 40x. Gas winners include Howmet, GE Vernova, Caterpillar and Baker Hughes. Cheap solar plus batteries deploys in 18-24 months, favoring Nextracker, Shoals, Fluence, Tesla and Albemarle. x.comÂ
Access to capital is the only variable that matters for the AI buildout behind Nebius, Talen Energy, CoreWeave, Constellation Energy and Micron, and it is faltering. The trade is extremely reflexive; as @YellowLabLife notes, there is not enough GDP to sustain spending at this rate. Multiples and estimates have to come down. x.comÂ
Energy providers such as Bloom Energy, Vistra and Constellation Energy look most likely to win from the Musk-neocloud dispute because power is the main US AI bottleneck, as Musk has said. SpaceX might bring 20 GW online next year; that scale could bid up the energy sector even without Bloom supplying SpaceX. x.com x.comÂ
Vistra's hedge book starts opening in 2028, just as data-center power demand surges, letting its unhedged output capture higher prices. It is fully hedged through 2027, but energy demand shows no sign of dropping soon; per Kalshi, US data-center power demand is projected to rise 755% by 2029. x.com x.com x.comÂ
Constellation Energy, Talen, NRG and Modine look weak because of the data-centers-in-space narrative. Once the first big solar-powered rack of GPUs reaches orbit, the market will react and cooling names will crash too, whether or not many space GPUs arrive this decade. @InvestsCletus adds that regulatory hurdles to deals between existing power plants and data centers also weigh on these names, while distributed-generation builders like Bloom Energy stay strong. x.com x.com x.comÂ
Talen Energy owns assets that cannot be cheaply rebuilt, and its growth after 2027 comes from a specific data center contract. Its 10.1 GW across ten eastern-grid plants is anchored by the 2.2 GW Susquehanna nuclear station, whose adjacent data center campus has a ten-year deal with a large cloud customer. Rebuilding would cost $12,300-17,570 per kW and take 84 months, and costs keep rising. The base business peaks in 2027 and falls 27% by 2030, while data center EBITDA grows about 18-fold. … Show more
Electricity is a clear bottleneck for AI, favoring AI-focused power and data-center infrastructure names over residential utilities. The US could be short 107 GW to power data centers through 2029, while China adds capacity year after year. Medium-term preferences are Cipher, Hut 8, Riot, TeraWulf, Galaxy, Equinix, Bloom Energy, Solaris, Vistra, GE Vernova, INIO, Williams, Liberty Energy, EROC and Cummins. x.com x.comÂ
Vistra, Constellation Energy and Talen Energy are now AI-infrastructure plays, not safety stocks, so they will likely move with AI sentiment and lag the S&P 500 long term. Buyers want data-center exposure, not dividends or recession safety, while the companies carry heavy debt, anemic revenue growth, margins that may not last, and fire, environmental and nuclear liability. All are hostage to high rates; Quanta and MasTec ride the same theme with fewer things that can go wrong. x.com x.com x.com … Show more
Vistra's shift toward long-term hyperscaler contracts may warrant a higher multiple than its roughly 14x forward earnings, versus about 21x for Constellation. Its 3.8 GW of nuclear commitments with Meta and Amazon could reduce exposure to volatile wholesale prices; Lotus added 2.6 GW of gas capacity and the pending Cogentrix deal could add 5.5 GW. Further contracts and controlled leverage remain important to the upside case. x.comÂ
