Semiconductor Market Commentary, Thru Project Mascot
Silicon Motion sells the NAND controller nobody can design around, as wafer output is allocated into 2027 and every die needs one. Qualification with Micron, SK hynix and hyperscalers takes years per socket, so won share moves slowly, though Phison and in-house teams fight for each design. Latest-quarter revenue grew 127% with 48% gross and 22% operating margins, net cash and a 0.70 PEG at 14.9x forward. The risk: top-five customers dominate revenue and NAND is brutally cyclical. x.comÂ
Silicon Motion, a pure-play NAND controller maker, benefits as NAND heads to the moon, and the stock has doubled in three months. Even @jukan05, who had dismissed NAND controller stocks, now says they could benefit more than expected. x.com x.comÂ
Phison is still growing very fast, and margin expansion should follow. Its latest monthly sales showed only a small month-on-month gain, common across Taiwan after a one-time growth rerating, but that is still about 50% annualized month-on-month growth on top of 376.5% year-on-year. It remains a strangely positioned company. x.comÂ
Silicon Motion's merchant-controller moat is widening, making it one of the cleanest growth-at-a-reasonable-price semiconductor plays. Gross margins held near 46.5%, insulated from NAND spot swings, and Edge AI is speeding a shift to higher-priced PCIe Gen5 and UFS 4.0 controllers. Enterprise SSD wins are on schedule, and NAND makers moving capex to HBM are cutting controller R&D, handing SKUs to Silicon Motion. It trades near 15 times ex-cash forward earnings with no debt. x.comÂ
SanDisk's Q4 points to structural demand: management said customer demand is growing faster than supply. Revenue of $8.97B beat $8.39B estimates, rising 372% YoY, datacenter revenue doubled sequentially to $2.98B, and Q1 guidance was broadly in line. Management sees the NAND market exceeding $300B in 2026 and approaching $500B in 2027. The guide was a bit weak for memory, and the non-answer on HBF pricing versus HBM leaves open whether demand stays sticky if HBF is priced high. x.com x.com x.com … Show more
NAND-based memory hierarchies that handle ever larger AI context and per-organization model tuning are driving Kioxia and SanDisk higher, and Phison, which plays well in the space, could follow. Tiered architectures are already happening. People use Phison's aiDAPTIV with SSDs for post-training, and its NAND is built for massive endurance, slow but long-lasting. Some data must be instant while other data can wait seconds or longer, so memory needs span a wide continuum below HBM. x.com x.comÂ
Samsung Electronics has no way out of the DRAM shortage for years, which means further memory price increases. Its foundry business adds long-term optionality given a shortage of logic capacity. Nikkei reports a surge in inquiries for Samsung's advanced chip manufacturing from existing and potential customers including BYD, Google, AMD and Tesla. x.comÂ
SanDisk is still priced as a storage company when it now owns a chokepoint in a structural memory shortage. HBM uses three times the wafer capacity of DDR5 per bit, so Samsung, SK hynix and Micron are shifting fabs to it and starving commodity DRAM. Micron says it has no line of sight on supply catching demand; DDR4 now costs more than DDR5, contract DRAM rose 90-95% in Q1, and new fabs arrive only in 2027. Apple seeking CXMT chips shows the strain. The cyclical view is 2026's mispricing. x.comÂ
Memory stocks likely keep going higher unless HBM and NAND buyers further down the AI supply chain cannot pay for their contracts. Micron, Western Digital, Seagate, SanDisk, SK hynix and Samsung are not expensive on almost any multiple; the question is whether earnings continue. Buyers can raise prices, monetize in new ways or raise capital. The risk is strain: the Silicon Data LLM token index is down 17.2% since June 2 as users switch to cheaper models, which could ripple through the stack. … Show more
Sandisk benefits because AI needs more storage, and long-term customer commitments could make NAND demand and pricing more predictable. x.comÂ
