Flight one has moved to 2027, at least 1.5 years later than the previously indicated timing; the lack of clearer guidance is frustrating. Rocket Lab shares look set to grind as Neutron's first flight slips, even though the core business is at its strongest. Q2 revenue hit a record $234.1M, up 62%, and backlog rose 137% to $2.356B. But the Q3 guide cuts GAAP gross margin to 29-31% from 36.1%, below the ~37.6% expected, with adjusted EBITDA losses widening to $17-23M on low-margin satellite programs, Mynaric integration and Neutron spending. A Q1 2027 Neutron debut is now the base case, which will disappoint high expectations. x.com 

Rocket Lab's existing Space Systems business makes Neutron upside optionality rather than the whole investment case. Space Systems supplied $189.5M, about 81% of Q2's record $234M revenue, alongside Electron launches, defense work, satellite manufacturing and components. Delaying Neutron's first launch to 2027 hurts a major catalyst and raises execution questions, but rushing a rocket failure would be costlier. x.com 

Rocket Lab has no reason to climb back above $100 anytime soon without a huge catalyst. Earnings were OK but nothing to rave about, and Neutron was delayed. x.com 

Rocket Lab still looks ridiculously expensive at 29 times forward sales against SpaceX at 22 times, even after a 65% fall. At 22 times, Rocket Lab would be roughly $38, and SpaceX would still be the pick. Rocket Lab's defense contracts and backlog position it to benefit from national-security spending. Its $2.36B backlog includes over 100 booked launches, with an $816M SDA satellite deal and a $266M Space Force HASTE deal for hypersonic testing. Despite the Neutron delay, its $36B valuation offers one of the space sector's best risk-reward setups: exposure to the same defense and space-infrastructure trend as SpaceX at a fraction of its valuation.
