Copper miners have a long-term supply case because major copper discoveries have dried up. The world will face a very large copper imbalance as the years pass. x.comÂ

Copper's long-forecast supply shortfall is now arriving. After a 2020 surplus that nobody cared about, 2026 brings the first deficit since 2009 with copper at $14,500, and the market is projected to be 13 million tonnes short by 2040. x.comÂ
Copper is one of the clearest trades over the next three years because supply is worse than most realize while AI accelerates demand. Chile, about a quarter of global production, just hit a nine-year production low, and copper miners have held up far better than silver and gold. Deutsche Bank forecasts copper soaring 50% to $22,050 a ton. x.comÂ
Wall Street has not priced in that the world could be short 10M metric tons of copper by 2040 without many more major discoveries. x.comÂ
Record copper import premiums signal imminent supply shortages. @robert_ivanhoe reports that the Yangshan premium broke its record, indicating scarce near-term supply in China. An Ivan Bebek chart using International Copper Study Group data shows preliminary global mine output down 1% year on year in January-July 2026, after eight straight years of growth. x.com x.comÂ
Copper hit its highest recorded price in August, and supply cannot answer quickly because a new mine takes twelve to fifteen years, if drilling, permits and governments cooperate. The investment case is the gap between demand rising from about 28M tonnes today to 42M by 2040 and supply stalling around 2030. Two of the four demand engines, the AI build-out and electrification, also drive the tech trade, so bulls on data centres cannot be indifferent to the metal that wires them. x.com x.comÂ
Copper is becoming the oil of the AI era because the energy transition, AI data centers and military rearmament are all hitting a supply curve locked by geology and time. Ore grades have fallen from 0.8% in 2000 to 0.46%, and new mines now take about 18 years to develop. Per S&P Global, mine output peaks in 2029, with a 2.2Mt concentrate deficit by 2032; the IEA sees mines meeting only about 70% of demand by 2035. Per CRU, data center copper demand rises from 260kt in 2025 to over 650kt by 2030. … Show more
Copper is a forgotten bottleneck of AI and is breaking out, which sets up copper miners to run. The names include giants Freeport-McMoRan, Southern Copper and Teck; growth producers Hudbay, Ero Copper and Lundin Mining; next-generation developers Ivanhoe Mines and NGEx Minerals; high-beta Taseko Mines; and the Global X Copper Miners ETF. x.comÂ
Copper prices will have to rise as demand is expected to grow significantly over the coming decade and global supply is expected to be 70% short by 2040. Per Chamath, copper is set to go absolutely parabolic as the most useful, cheap conductive material, used in data centers, chips and weapons. It is also a great macro hedge right now and a favorite long-term safe-haven pick, with ETFs preferred and COPX the current favorite. A copper super-cycle is coming because demand is exploding while supply shrinks. S&P Global says supply will decline 7% between 2025 and 2040 while demand grows 50%, and Bloomberg expects demand to grow 40% by 2050, driven by the energy transition, the AI buildout and robots. No new supply is coming over the next decade. Per the Kobeissi Letter, copper futures have hit a record high, up 22% this year and over 70% since January 2025. x.com x.comÂ
Copper miners stand to benefit as US Section 232 copper tariffs, due to be finalized by June 30, weaponize the raw materials AI hardware needs. Goldman Sachs warns new tariffs will likely trigger large-scale hoarding by US buyers, and COMEX copper stocks have already passed a record 650,000 tons. The crunch is spreading to tungsten, tin, tantalum and indium; that cost-push inflation hurts AI hardware margins but is structurally very bullish for copper-rich miners. x.comÂ
