Alphabet's businesses beyond search are why it will lead the real AI boom. Google Cloud, DeepMind and Waymo broaden its reach, and its $900 million SpaceX investment is now worth $85 billion. Alphabet's AI edge rested on talent density, and that is steadily draining away. Jeff Dean, who was heavily involved in the TPU win, and Noam Shazeer have both left, Dean to found Discovery Loop, while OpenAI's and Anthropic's benches look extremely strong. Demis Hassabis seems to have one foot out the door with Isomorphic Labs. Its conduct over the past decade also raises stronger ethical objections than Meta's. Alphabet is repeating its biggest AI mistake by putting resources behind financing Anthropic and selling chip access instead of its DeepMind lab, which is why talent left. In January 2020 Noam Shazeer built a chatbot he said could replace search, but Google sat on a three-year lead to protect search, let him leave, then paid $2.7 billion in 2024 to rehire him. Alphabet's DeepMind reorganization should ultimately help, offering a longer-term buying chance despite near-term weakness. After Jeff Dean left, Demis Hassabis moved to DeepMind chairman and Alphabet chief scientist, and news that he too had planned to leave may pressure shares further. Alphabet's AI buildout is hurting near-term operating profit as capex becomes depreciation. Operating income missed by about 6% and margin fell to about 32% from 34%, while much of the roughly 30% EPS miss came from gains and losses on investments, not Search, YouTube or Cloud.
