Himax is a core bottleneck in TSMC's COUPE co-packaged optics ecosystem, with first commercial CPO shipments due in H2 2026 as a short validation horizon. FOCI assembles fiber units but cannot ship without Himax's optical substrates. Himax owns wafer-level optics lines already paid for by a decade of AR spending, so even small optics sales would lift profits sharply and force a re-rating. Himax offers high-upside optionality on microLED-based co-packaged optics, alongside its micro-lens arrays that route light into fiber. The microLED approach uses hundreds or thousands of simple low-speed lanes, removing high-speed SerDes, DSP and the InP laser and cutting energy below 1 pJ/bit. Himax's display-driver know-how maps unusually well onto it. Himax adds multiple entry points into AR and MR glasses on top of co-packaged optics, through WiseEye, LCoS and other wafer-level optics components. Foci has much higher CPO revenue exposure because it sells the entire finished component to TSMC, including the module connecting to the external cable. @zephyr_z9 notes an Apple AR glasses deal pushed Himax up further. x.com 

TSMC may lose pricing power as performance gains shift from shrinking transistors to stacking, interconnects and optics, while logic folding could make older processes competitive. Despite strong leading-edge demand, investors may overestimate the profit share its node leadership can retain. Its cautious expansion and past reluctance toward advanced packaging suggest a risk-averse culture that protects returns but could leave it late to disruptive technologies and key customers. x.com 

Xintec offers TSMC's co-packaged optics testing bottleneck at a huge discount. TSMC's COUPE volume production starts this year with wafer-level testing flagged as one of three critical scaling challenges, and TSMC plans to pursue CPO with its subsidiary Xintec, which is ramping wafer testing capacity for second-half 2026 growth. 90% trial yields on 310mm pilot lines suggest technical risk is falling faster than its roughly $2.18B market cap reflects. x.com 

FormFactor's production-ready wafer-level CPO probe gives it a test opportunity at a major foundry, but that business depends on one customer. CEO Mike Slessor says the CPO piece flows through a foundry worth 10% of sales; he did not name it, though an analyst named TSMC. Triton tests photonic wafers before stacking; post-stack test remains difficult. FormFactor expects CPO test revenue to significantly exceed $20m this year and estimates a $400m market by 2030. x.com 

Putting CPO optical engines in the interposer should make TSMC the leader at that packaging task. The OCI-MSA diagram shows an optical engine mounted on a high-density interposer; GlobalFoundries has a modest agreement in the area, but should not be expected to earn the same profit. x.com 

Soitec gains from co-packaged optics, which multiply its Photonics-SOI content about 4x per optical port, from roughly 50mm² in a pluggable to 200mm² in a CPO switch. Its proprietary Smart Cut process, with over 4,300 patents and 12-24-month foundry qualification lock-in, gives it over 95% of photonics substrates. FOCI's ReLFACon reflowable lensed fiber array connector is its moat in CPO: it links fiber arrays directly into silicon-photonics CPO modules with heat-tolerant materials matching the chip's thermal expansion, holding alignment through hot packaging. Its fiber array units, about 40% of CPO module cost, partly decide whether CPO can be mass-produced. Himax and TSMC ties make it Taiwan's core FAU player. @aleabitoreddit expects Nvidia's Computex keynote to lift Taiwan optics including FOCI. x.com 

Photonics and co-packaged optics stocks including Sivers, Lightwave Logic, Almae, Applied Optoelectronics, Aehr, LPKF, Lumentum, Coherent and Soitec benefit as the CPO buildout moves faster than expected.
