Shorter qualification windows make transceiver testing a critical bottleneck for photonics, favoring Viavi, Aehr Test Systems, Cohu, FormFactor and Teradyne. Celestica's OCP slide shows windows falling from 36 months for 400G to 24 for 800G and 18 for 1.6T. Optical test makers such as FormFactor, Aehr Test Systems and Viavi should keep growing whichever optical path wins, because every interconnect, pluggable, near-packaged or co-packaged, must be tested. Optical stocks plunged after a June report of CPO shipment delays, and engineers now point to a growing role for near-packaged optics and possible delays in some scale-up CPO. Aehr remains a concentrated, expensive way to own wafer-level photonics burn-in: its 10-K says silicon-photonics customers primarily drove that revenue growth, and FY2027 guidance of $130m-$150m could nearly triple FY2026 sales, yet shares value it at about 20x the guide. Teradyne's acquired photonic-chip test business is not material to its much larger sales; Aehr's top five customers provided 70% of FY2026 revenue, so orders matter more than the headline CPO opportunity. x.com 

FormFactor's new Pharos optical probe series is important news and potentially a major re-rating enabler. Launched September 23 for silicon photonics and co-packaged optics testing, it combines low-loss coupling, precise alignment, automated calibration and repeatability in a single probe family, per another investor's summary. x.com 

FormFactor's production-ready wafer-level CPO probe gives it a test opportunity at a major foundry, but that business depends on one customer. CEO Mike Slessor says the CPO piece flows through a foundry worth 10% of sales; he did not name it, though an analyst named TSMC. Triton tests photonic wafers before stacking; post-stack test remains difficult. Aehr Test Systems has a proven lead in a test step AI optics needs but few can run at scale: high-power wafer-level burn-in for silicon photonics. Co-packaged optics makes it mandatory, since a chip failing after bonding scraps the whole switch, and newer devices need 2-4x more burn-in power. Bookings hit $37.2M, up over 500% in a quarter, at a book-to-bill above 3.5x. Goldman sees optical networking growing from about $15B in 2026 to $154B by 2028, and the test bottleneck forms first. x.com 

Optics and photonics should be among AI's biggest winners as faster GPU networks need optical connections that suppliers cannot expand quickly enough. Lumentum says some components are sold out through early 2029; Sivers is investing $30M to target more than 100M lasers a year, with operations expected in Q4 2027. Quantum computing's suppliers get paid whoever's machine wins, as steel mills did while most railroads went bankrupt. Chips, test benches, cryogenic freezers, inspection, lasers, vacuum gear and light must be bought regardless.
