Intel's foundry may be closer than the market assumes because its UMC 12nm partnership brings external-customer experience and a more customer-friendly design kit. Musk said Terafab plans to use Intel 14A, with Tesla and SpaceX building and running the fabs themselves; that would be an important outside test. Architecture changes could lift TSMC wafer demand. Shifting from 12-high to 8-high lifts volumes; an on-device AI phone upgrade cycle would be enormously bullish, while ASIC gains over Nvidia help because ASICs use more wafers. TSMC is arguably more vital to AI buildout than MAG stocks and a reasonable extended-AI-cycle play at a not-crazy multiple, barring big macro events. TSMC may lose pricing power as performance gains shift from shrinking transistors to stacking, interconnects and optics, while logic folding could make older processes competitive. Despite strong leading-edge demand, investors may overestimate the profit share its node leadership can retain. Its cautious expansion and past reluctance toward advanced packaging suggest a risk-averse culture that protects returns but could leave it late to disruptive technologies and key customers. x.comÂ
SpaceX's $40B financing for GPU procurement adds another large, funded source of AI-infrastructure demand, with spending flowing into GPUs, memory, networking and optics. At the same time, InP substrates are seriously short, and Morgan Stanley identifies InP, EML and CW lasers as primary bottlenecks; suppliers that secure raw materials should gain pricing power. TSMC's conservative delay in high-NA adoption will be its downfall as Intel's stitching advances sooner. TSMC's larger-mask alternative requires changing the entire stage and is projected for production by 2033; Intel's stitching is substantially derisked and could be ready for volume production in 2027 at the earliest. AI's biggest bottleneck is power and cooling, not memory, making Vertiv, GE Vernova, Bloom Energy and Eaton buys. Musk expects a prolonged compute shortage; Nvidia, Broadcom, Micron, SK hynix, TSMC, Arista, AMD, Marvell, Credo, Lumentum, ASML and Astera Labs could benefit massively. Intel's high valuation is hard to justify while its foundry turnaround remains unproven. At about 59x forward earnings, nearly three times TSMC's 19x, Intel has slower projected revenue growth; its foundry lost $2.09 billion in Q2 2026, while TSMC's Q3 operating margin was 58.7%. Its Q4 revenue guide of $52.3-54.3B beats $49B consensus, implying 14% sequential growth, with 65-67% gross-margin guidance; planned Q4 capex is $19-23B versus $13.8B last quarter.
