Public Markets Investor, Opportunistic Buying & Cost-Basis Management
Booking Holdings looks safe from Meta's Muse agent as more sites block it. A weekend rental-car search through Muse priced the same Hertz car, model and locations over 25% higher than the Booking app, and above Booking's website. Muse was also blocked from handling an Amazon customer-service issue, even via a PC browser, so it looks overhyped and usage may fade. x.comÂ
Booking Holdings looks hard for Meta's Muse AI agent to displace because its best deals sit behind its app. Booking offers special unadvertised prices only in its app, cheaper even than Genius rates for logged-in website users, so an agent that logs in still has to book through Booking; Airbnb's properties are mostly exclusive. The likeliest outcome is that Meta strikes affiliate marketing deals with travel aggregators. x.com x.comÂ
Booking Holdings' bull case faces a test from Meta's new Muse agent app, and the key question is whether Muse erodes it. The analysis looks at what sets Muse apart from other agents, what the market fears, hands-on use of the app to calibrate that fear, and whether the launch weakens the bullish thesis on Booking. x.comÂ
Meta's Muse is likely to gain a major consumer-agent advantage from a network linking its users' agents. Meta's 3.5bn daily platform users offer unmatched distribution; 25% of 10mn Muse signups use it daily, with early retention twice Threads' initial rate. Muse is the best pure consumer agent today, and the odds of a rival surpassing it are low, though it is early and execution matters. The stock prices in little beyond Meta's core business. x.comÂ
Meta's Muse is gaining a potential toll booth on online checkout, which squeezes Booking and Airbnb. Within 48 hours Shopify, PayPal and Expedia joined Muse checkout, since each merchant has reason to join early if agents steer demand. For Booking and Airbnb, joining could mean paying fees on bookings that would have come direct anyway, about 90% of Airbnb's traffic as of Q3 2023; staying out bets booking habits won't move to Muse. No deal has disclosed economics, the number to watch. x.comÂ
Booking Holdings looks ridiculously cheap against its own history, and its business and moat inspire much more confidence than Uber's even with AI risk. Its P/FCF is 11.94, versus a ten-year median of 18.85. x.comÂ
Meta's established consumer distribution could give Muse an advantage in bringing AI agents to everyday users. The stock looks increasingly constructive heading into tomorrow's earnings. Muse has 10 million downloads, while Meta's apps reach billions and its ad network connects millions of businesses. If agents become a consumer interface for discovery and transactions, the economics could extend into commerce, advertising and business services. x.comÂ
Booking Holdings faces a big risk from Meta's Muse and other AI agents that will find bookings without a middleman. x.comÂ
A small advertising beat may not sustain Meta's stock after earnings if Muse cannot show durable use and paying customers to justify rising AI spending. Muse could monetize Meta's existing merchant base through subscriptions and more ad spend, but service costs and whether users keep paying remain unproven. Strong fourth-quarter guidance or firmer Muse usage and payment data would make the outlook more positive; September's rally alone does not establish a sell-the-news outcome. x.comÂ
AI price-comparison risk to Booking Holdings is a big nothing burger, since Google and Google Maps have offered comparisons for ages. Personal checks find Google showing no better price than Booking about two-thirds of the time, and saving a few euros is not worth another spam account or the lost time. Having all bookings in one app is also far more convenient than digging through a messy Gmail inbox. x.com x.comÂ
As consumer AI agents become the new battleground, booking aggregators Booking and Expedia look like clear losers, facing margin compression and more comparison shopping. Ad platforms such as Meta should thrive on entertainment-first ad consumption, while businesses that depend on humans using their own interfaces face pressure. OpenAI and Anthropic are expected to launch consumer agents to compete with Muse and Grok Bot in the coming weeks. x.comÂ
Meta is a massive advertising business that already has a way to put its new AI products in people's hands. Q2 revenue grew 28% to $60.8 billion, with ad impressions up 14% and average ad prices up 12%. It is adding Muse, a personal AI agent that can send emails, book travel and handle tasks through its own app or WhatsApp. x.comÂ
