monday.com is a profitable SaaS platform priced like legacy software because the market fears AI disruption. Q1 was very solid: revenue grew 24%, GAAP operating income was positive, free cash flow was strong, and enterprise customers are still growing much faster. Software incumbents like monday.com and CrowdStrike should hold their ground because companies will lean on existing software to integrate AI rather than rip it out. Token shortages make AI hardly usable without top-dollar spend, so firms with no business vibe-coding will use software they already pay for, which can scale to get cheaper tokens. Seat-based software is highly vulnerable in the AI era, while usage-based software with strong moats is the winning formula. AI agents can do many human tasks, shrinking seats and revenue at Salesforce, ServiceNow, Workday, Atlassian, HubSpot, Zoom, DocuSign, Asana, monday.com, UiPath and Adobe. Usage-based models that charge for compute, data or outcomes, such as Snowflake, Datadog, Cloudflare, Palantir and CrowdStrike, tend to grow with AI activity. Seat-based software incumbents have no obvious right to win the AI shift, so buying SaaS on a rebound call is risky. Dan Shipper, on Lenny Rachitsky's podcast, said SaaS stocks will be up majorly in the next couple of years. But paradigm shifts rarely favor incumbents: these companies are slow and bloated, with business models that keep them from fully adopting AI, while rivals are AI-native. monday.com is priced as if growth will soon turn negative, which is far from certain, at 1.1x 2027 EV/sales and 9x 2027 EV/FCF excluding SBC. It still grows in the high teens with 110% net dollar retention and just bought back a lot of stock. For 20 years building software required engineers, letting SaaS firms charge monthly fees forever; when anyone can build a working product in a weekend with Claude, software stops being the moat.
