Smartoptics' Q1 one-time cost signals management sees structural demand. The $0.5M charge was not a relocation from Oslo but a capacity expansion in Kista, Stockholm, where it has operated for years: 4,100 sqm of lab, warehouse and training space on a seven-year lease. Management signed it in July 2025, before Q1's 59.6% revenue growth, and you do not commit to seven years of extra capacity unless you believe demand is structural. x.com 

Smartoptics is an underfollowed optics play that could double in the next month or two based on peer comparisons. Sales likely reach $300M by 2028, and while most peers trade at 5-10x 2028 sales, Smartoptics trades at 1.5x. It is already profitable, has a strong balance sheet and is growing very fast. x.com 

Optical suppliers face demand beyond capacity, strengthening the sector's case for the coming months. Lumentum's CEO says it is effectively sold out through early 2029; Ciena says lead times limit growth, and Coherent cites constraints across nearly every product line. Applied Optoelectronics doubled its share count to expand capacity and meet demand. Soitec raised guidance twice this year; Marvell raised guidance and its 2030 TAM, while Broadcom sees 4x EPS by 2030 on visible demand. x.com 

Ciena's new 2029 margin target depends on price increases sticking after the optical shortage ends. Its investor forum set about $14bn of 2029 revenue, roughly 30% a year from 2026, adjusted gross margin near 50% and 32-35% operating margin. Orders grew 79% a year and backlog 118% from 2024 to 2026, and the CFO sees no supply-demand balance before 2028. But price hikes of high single digits to low 20s are a key margin lever, so whether fiscal 2027 margin holds 45-46% is the test. x.com 

Optics and photonics should be among AI's biggest winners as faster GPU networks need optical connections that suppliers cannot expand quickly enough. Lumentum says some components are sold out through early 2029; Sivers is investing $30M to target more than 100M lasers a year, with operations expected in Q4 2027. Nvidia's Q1 FY27 results materially improve demand visibility across the optics, networking and photonics stack. Revenue hit $81.6B, up 85%, with networking at $14.8B, up 199%, and Nvidia named multi-year optics deals with Coherent, Corning and Lumentum plus a Marvell partnership on NVLink Fusion and silicon photonics. Ciena's selloff priced a slowdown from 35% to 30% growth, but most of that 30% is already sold at prices Ciena is still raising. Q3 revenue rose 37% to $1.67B, the FY26 guide rose to $6.42B, and the early FY27 floor is at least 30% growth with at least 45% gross margin. Nokia is a long, not a trade: a telecom giant with a fast-growing AI segment. AI & Cloud revenue rose 105% to €446M in Q2, about 9% of the group, and orders tripled to €2.8B, roughly half converting within 12 months. Optical reached 18% of revenue, lifting a sum-of-parts estimate to about $17.20, and buying NXP's Chandler plant for InP adds capacity. Rising 1.6T switching demand favors optical suppliers, though their execution risks vary. Bank of America says the market could grow ~101% annually through 2030. Marvell's leading DSPs and Lumentum's supply-short 200G EML lasers are lowest risk; Applied Optoelectronics' capacity expansion and Fabrinet's customer concentration make them medium risk.
