Adtran's new optical product now looks badly timed. After the earnings call it looks like a prototype, not even at sampling, while the market has moved past 100G per lane and 800G may be skipped faster than expected in favor of 1.6T and CPO. The CEO said in May that volume production should be ready in about a year, just as competitors bring much more capacity online. Customers like it and Adtran should find a place, but a smaller, slower revenue ramp makes the re-rating less compelling. x.com

Adtran's optics opportunity is too uncertain to own for now, because hyperscalers won't mass-buy Adtran-branded transceivers. In pure hardware, Asian mass manufacturers will beat it on price and scale, so the only truly bullish case for its LPO tech, like LiteWave800, is a pivot to licensing its optical engine and MicroMux Quattro architecture. Competition is massive and AI budgets flow now, while Adtran is a year or two from ready. Sampling feedback from cloud giants could change the view. x.com

Rising 1.6T switching demand favors optical suppliers, though their execution risks vary. Bank of America says the market could grow ~101% annually through 2030. Marvell's leading DSPs and Lumentum's supply-short 200G EML lasers are lowest risk; Applied Optoelectronics' capacity expansion and Fabrinet's customer concentration make them medium risk. AXT makes the substrates underneath the AI optical stack, InP, GaAs and germanium, and the market is finally noticing. InP feeds the lasers in 800G and 1.6T transceivers: no InP, no high-speed optics. Only a handful of companies produce these wafers at scale, and as hyperscalers race to upgrade AI networks, the materials layer is getting tight.
