Even half of a rumored jump in Applied Optoelectronics' transceiver shipments would be well above what is priced in. A Substack claims 800G shipments will rise from about 600,000-700,000 to about 5 million next year, plus about 100,000 1.6T units a month; the rumor is low-confidence. x.com 

Optical transceiver demand exceeds supply, and 1.6T lifts revenue per module for suppliers able to qualify capacity. Applied Optoelectronics raised at least $1.62B through 2026 ATMs; its last reported monthly capacity was 200,000 modules versus a year-end target above 650,000. Credo expects over $600M in FY2027 revenue across optical DSPs, PICs and modules, not modules alone. Shipments, yields and margins must prove out. Optical networking's broader rollout will be slow because scale-up and scale-out require orders of magnitude more connections than today's limited optical distance links. Supply-chain discussions echo that slow pace. NPO/CPO starts in switches and reaches XPUs and GPUs much later, with new challenges. Lumentum is a leader in AI laser supply, where demand will outstrip supply into 2027, per Samsung Securities. Its edge is technology and scale: it launched a 1.6T DR4 transceiver using 200G-per-lane EML in March 2026, holds 50-60% of the high-end laser chip market with an EML seen as the industry gold standard, and its co-packaged optics should enter volume production from mid-2027. Coherent is its main rival, with vertical integration and 6-inch InP wafers as cost advantages. x.com 

Lumentum stock should still perform strongly as OCS, CPO and cloud transceivers could reach 60% of revenue by 2030, more than offsetting even a full EML loss. Beyond TFLN cannibalizing 400G/lane EML modulation in 3-plus years, a shift from one laser per lane to two CW lasers for eight lanes could reduce laser sales in 3-5 years. x.com 

Lightwave Logic could be the next Lumentum because its Perkinamine polymer, spun onto standard silicon wafers, makes modulators with 110GHz+ bandwidth at 50% less power, a big edge at 800G and 1.6T in AI data centers. Tower Semiconductor and GlobalFoundries integrated it in the same week, and four Fortune Global 500 firms are in Stage 3, prototype to product. Its ARM-like royalty model is capital light.
