Okamoto Machine Tool Works has likely bottomed as 300mm wafer capital spending turns a corner. Wafer polisher orders jumped 370% last quarter as SUMCO, Shin-Etsu and GlobalWafers reported tight 300mm capacity and planned line upgrades, and its packaging grinders are drawing interest via Mitsui's push in Taiwan. These two lines should power a strong earnings recovery starting this year, while the machine tool business stops dragging margins. The valuation offers at least 50% upside. x.com
Leading-edge wafer demand is bullish for semiconductor equipment makers because TSMC is already at over 100% utilization on those nodes. Silicon wafer makers GlobalWafers, SUMCO, Shin-Etsu and Siltronic face a price upcycle as AI demand meets locked supply. Per SemiAnalysis, sub-7nm logic epi-wafer demand nears 1 million a month by 2028, tightening faster than expected, while HBM's heavy wafer use absorbs the glut. All roads lead to Shin-Etsu as the US weighs a polysilicon price floor and tariffs to protect domestic producers, including Hemlock Semiconductor, its joint venture with Corning, per Reuters via Wall St Engine. Front-end chip-equipment makers ASML, Applied Materials, Lam Research and KLA are receiving a near-doubling of TSMC's equipment plan the market has not yet priced. Per TSMC's Cliff Hou, its 2026 equipment purchase plan rose from 1X to 1.5X within a quarter and 1.9X by July, a payment-backed commitment rather than a forecast.
