Irrational Analysis
Semiconductor Engineer, Engineering-Driven Investment Analysis
GlobalFoundries' patent campaign is a materially adverse complication for Tower Semiconductor but not an existential one, and the most probable end is a settlement or license on narrower terms than the complaint. It touches Tower's core RF, power and radar platforms during its $920M silicon-photonics and SiGe expansion. The two Texas suits and ITC complaint over 11 process patents are unproven. Legal leverage favors GlobalFoundries, but a clean GlobalFoundries sweep looks only 15-25% likely. … Show more
Tower Semiconductor's stronger-than-expected capacity expansion lets it fill more optical-chip orders itself, reducing customers' incentive to move to foundries they regard as technologically weaker. Its hybrid bonding packs dense connections between photonic chips and their driver electronics, an advantage viewed as effectively unmatched among Western suppliers. Tower remains one of the highest-conviction holdings despite the portfolio trim. x.comÂ
GlobalFoundries' margins should rise relative to Tower Semiconductor's, if reports on each company's 8-inch to 12-inch transition and capacity ramp are correct, even though both now have similar net margins. GlobalFoundries also trades at a much cheaper multiple than Tower. x.comÂ
Tower Semiconductor's 2028 guidance makes its shares attractively valued around $180 despite competition from Silith, GlobalFoundries, STMicroelectronics and others. The stock previously felt too rich to add to. x.com x.comÂ
Tower Semiconductor looks set to be the leading silicon-photonics foundry as the path to CPO runs through NPO. First NPO deployments are planned for 2027, with $1.3B of contract value for 2027 alone and more after. A multi-year IQE epi-wafer deal protects it from the InP bottleneck, it is bringing laser-to-silicon bonding in-house, and a dual-track 300 mm plan in Japan aims to quadruple capacity without dilution. Its SiPho coherent modules for Marvell have passed multi-million units. x.comÂ
GlobalFoundries is the most underappreciated foundry in the AI supply chain. x.comÂ
Tower Semiconductor is a short because the market cannot digest competition. It sits on a short list alongside rates, TSMC, Vertiv, ASML and Broadcom; GlobalFoundries is not counted as that competition. x.com x.comÂ
Sivers Semiconductors' new GlobalFoundries collaboration, combined with a bounce off its 20-day EMA near 59 SEK, points to another move higher. Per @ren_stocks, Sivers' laser arrays will be integrated into GlobalFoundries' silicon photonics reference designs and its SCALE co-packaged light-engine platform, putting its lasers across CPO, LPO and other data center interconnects through a tier-1 foundry. x.comÂ
GlobalFoundries' Xanadu partnership strengthens its position as a shared quantum-manufacturing platform across architectures. Its Malta fab will develop ultra-low-loss SiN photonics and superconducting nanowire detectors, alongside up to $375M in US quantum R&D funding. It ranked first of 23 companies in the earlier quantum map; production volumes and revenue remain undisclosed, with process transfer and yield validation still ahead. x.comÂ
Lightwave Logic has moved from lab to industrial production: its modulator platform is in GlobalFoundries' silicon photonics PDK, Tower signed a development deal for mass-production integration, and its Polymer PDK 1.1 lets customers design chips on standard foundry lines. Its Perkinamine polymer switches ultra-fast at a fraction of the voltage, easing silicon's power and heat limits at 1.6T+. As an asset-light licensor, one hyperscaler adopting it could bring step-function revenue. x.comÂ
