Defiance's photonics ETF is a good tracker for photonics because it covers the whole supply chain, from indium phosphide to equipment, lasers and modules. Its top holdings fit: Lumentum is the best InP laser maker, AXT benefits as the InP shortage worsens, and Aixtron makes the MOCVD machines that produce lasers. Marvell risks paying a peak-scarcity price for Lumentum if optical supply catches up by 2028-30. The proposed ~$99B deal values Lumentum at roughly 20x guided annualized revenue and 58x estimated after-tax operating income, while Lumentum, Coherent and Chinese suppliers are adding laser capacity. Marvell's leading DSPs and Lumentum's supply-short 200G EML lasers are lowest risk; Applied Optoelectronics' capacity expansion and Fabrinet's customer concentration make them medium risk. Semtech's high-power lasers offer upside because its fiscal 2030 target counts only a very moderate contribution from them. Management says data-center revenue will more than double this year and next on backlog; it plans to grow laser capacity three to four times by year-end as demand exceeds supply. BofA estimates AI networking will grow from $95.6B in 2026 to $394B in 2030, with optical reaching $111B and co-packaged and near-packaged optics reaching $14.1B and $10.7B.
