Co-packaged optics standards could make finished transceiver modules smaller and more interchangeable as chip designers build optical engines inside their packages. That is another reason to avoid Lumentum, Coherent and Applied Optoelectronics and prefer Soitec. Corning's $2B at-the-market facility with Goldman Sachs is an option to sell stock, not a raise, so Friday's after-hours drop priced dilution that may never happen. The 8-K says sales may be limited, depend on market conditions and capital needs, and fund general corporate purposes with no named project. Prepaid fiber orders make 2027-28 demand a stronger signal than capex plans. Corning reports $639M in net customer deposits in the first nine months and expects data-center interconnect to beat its former $1B-by-2030 target on timing and size. That backs Lumen's intercity build, though its next allocation may require a bigger commitment. Tight Corning supply gives Amphenol room to gain share until capacity expands; strong demand alone has not lifted stocks across the chain. x.com 

Pluggable optics have a new scaling path alongside CPO and NPO, supporting demand for light from Lumentum, Coherent and Applied Optoelectronics. Nvidia and Cisco's planned USFP packs 16 full-duplex 400G/lane connections into an OSFP-sized footprint, targeting four times the bandwidth density of 200G/lane modules while retaining replaceability. Corning is a structural loser from orbital AI data centers, because compute migrating from fiber-intensive terrestrial data centers to zero-fiber orbital ones reduces fiber demand. In vacuum, satellites link by free-space lasers rather than fiber, so Corning's hyperscale data center fiber business faces a long-term headwind. It is not a short, since 5G and fiber-to-the-home provide other drivers, but the exponential AI-fiber narrative weakens materially. x.com 

Optical transceiver demand exceeds supply, and 1.6T lifts revenue per module for suppliers able to qualify capacity. Applied Optoelectronics raised at least $1.62B through 2026 ATMs; its last reported monthly capacity was 200,000 modules versus a year-end target above 650,000. Credo expects over $600M in FY2027 revenue across optical DSPs, PICs and modules, not modules alone. Shipments, yields and margins must prove out. Tighter Lumentum laser allocations would strengthen Coherent's pricing power if Marvell's rumored acquisition leads it to prioritize Nvidia and its own modules. Other buyers would face tighter supply, and hyperscalers would push harder to second-source lasers from Coherent. x.com 

Corning is low conviction because being a one-of-one supplier critical to photonics does not guarantee it benefits as much as others in the supply chain. Corning should do well long term, but other, higher-conviction stocks offer better exposure to the photonics era. x.com 

Optics and photonics should be among AI's biggest winners as faster GPU networks need optical connections that suppliers cannot expand quickly enough. Lumentum says some components are sold out through early 2029; Sivers is investing $30M to target more than 100M lasers a year, with operations expected in Q4 2027.
