Optics and photonics should be among AI's biggest winners as faster GPU networks need optical connections that suppliers cannot expand quickly enough. Lumentum says some components are sold out through early 2029; Sivers is investing $30M to target more than 100M lasers a year, with operations expected in Q4 2027. Corning's optics business looks ready for a comeback as its fiber and high-density optical connectivity move data across massive AI GPU clusters. Optical sales rose 32% year over year to $2.07 billion, EPS is expected to more than triple by 2028, and the business is backed by major AI infrastructure deals with NVIDIA, Meta and Amazon. x.com 

Co-packaged optics standards could make finished transceiver modules smaller and more interchangeable as chip designers build optical engines inside their packages. That is another reason to avoid Lumentum, Coherent and Applied Optoelectronics and prefer Soitec. Lumentum and Coherent now earn a lot from finished modules, leaving them exposed if the architecture changes. x.com

Applied Optoelectronics and Lumentum face lower optical transceiver demand as two new network designs cut optical links per GPU. Amazon says its Resilient Network Graphs use 69% fewer routers and became the default for most new AWS data centers by April 2026. OpenAI says its Multipath Reliable Connection protocol links over 100,000 GPUs with two switch tiers instead of three or four. B. Riley reportedly sees transceiver counts falling 40-50% and cut Applied Optoelectronics to Neutral. x.com 

More lasers per module and new 400G DSPs could keep the pluggable-optics runway open for years, supporting Lumentum, Coherent, Marvell, Applied Optoelectronics and Sivers even as co-packaged optics approaches. NVIDIA and Cisco co-designed a module with four times the bandwidth in the same slot; fewer modules per GPU look bearish, but the added optical content points the other way. x.com 

A projected 322-fold expansion in scale-up optical engines favors Lumentum, Coherent and Applied Optoelectronics.
