Optical circuit switching could become a far larger market if Nvidia adopts it, ending near-total reliance on Google and benefiting Lumentum, Huber+Suhner and Celestica. Per @FundaAI, Nvidia is likely to adopt OCS after late 2028 to connect GPUs across racks, and it backed Spanish OCS startup iPronics. OCS is about $400M today and a few billion next year; Funda suggests it could reach $20B a year by 2030. Open question: how rack-to-rack OCS compares with NPO and CPO. x.com 

Lumentum looks only slightly attractive, and only after another 10% drop, at about 24.5 times its guided $40 FY28 EPS at $980. Its upside is almost entirely driven by optical circuit switch demand from lead customer Google, which also points to a great 2027-2028 for fellow Google OCS supplier Huber+Suhner. Lumentum's indium phosphide capacity makes it perhaps the best way to own the scarcity of optics. Per Bloomberg, Lumentum expects to sell out its 2028 capacity within two quarters, backed by a newly acquired InP device plant. Nvidia invested because larger clusters raise optical interconnect costs and bottlenecks. Marvell risks paying a peak-scarcity price for Lumentum if optical supply catches up by 2028-30. The proposed ~$99B deal values Lumentum at roughly 20x guided annualized revenue and 58x estimated after-tax operating income, while Lumentum, Coherent and Chinese suppliers are adding laser capacity. The DSP-and-laser combination has strategic logic, but durable scarcity economics and Nvidia's response remain uncertain. x.com 

Co-packaged optics standards could make finished transceiver modules smaller and more interchangeable as chip designers build optical engines inside their packages. That is another reason to avoid Lumentum, Coherent and Applied Optoelectronics and prefer Soitec. Lumentum and Coherent now earn a lot from finished modules, leaving them exposed if the architecture changes. x.com 

Lumentum's valuation is supported by Nvidia's co-packaged optics scale-out progressing faster than expected. Spectrum-X CPO switches are in mass production on better component yields, with shipments forecast at 15k in 4Q26 rising to 100k in 2027. CPO and NPO are seen contributing 12% and 26% of Lumentum's revenue in 2027 and 2028. Scale-up optical engine estimates were revised to 6.5m and 42m for 2027 and 2028, with full NPO adoption for the cycle retained. x.com 

Rising 1.6T switching demand favors optical suppliers, though their execution risks vary. Bank of America says the market could grow ~101% annually through 2030. Marvell's leading DSPs and Lumentum's supply-short 200G EML lasers are lowest risk; Applied Optoelectronics' capacity expansion and Fabrinet's customer concentration make them medium risk. Aeluma remains pre-commercial, while Lightwave Logic's polymer modulators are a high-risk moonshot despite its TSM partnership. x.com 

Lumentum is a great business, but at $954 its risk/reward is not attractive. Applying 30x to fiscal 2028 non-GAAP EPS of $40 gives a 2027 price target of $1,200, about 26% upside, or roughly 15% after adjusting for execution, financial, technology and supply risks. Reaching it needs on-time manufacturing ramps, sustained pricing power and cash flow without excessive dilution.
