AST SpaceMobile's direct-to-phone satellite network makes it an extremely bullish long-term space-economy bet. Partnerships with more than 60 mobile operators representing over 3 billion potential subscribers and about $1.3 billion in contracted revenue backlog support the case. It targets initial, intermittent broadband coverage in five countries before end-2026; its market cap is roughly half Rocket Lab's, though both face significant execution risks. x.com

AST SpaceMobile gains a launch partner in Japan, and the stock is about to go back to the $70s. Per Nikkei, Rakuten will start direct-to-smartphone satellite service with AST within 2026, using video calling, which Starlink does not yet support, to chase SpaceX. x.com

SpaceX's competitive threat makes AST SpaceMobile less attractive at these levels than SpaceX and Rocket Lab. AST SpaceMobile's weekly chart shows a downtrend and strong outflows, though the stock is near marked support. x.com

AST SpaceMobile is semi-sovereign at best because an American company ultimately owns and controls its satellites. It is hard to see many countries, especially the EU, buying a fully sovereign pitch when they may want to own the entire space-mobile stack, as with compute infrastructure. AST can still win big on international agreements; some may be permanent, while others may be temporary if countries decide to build their own capacity. x.com  x.com  x.com

The FCC granted AST SpaceMobile's application to modify its authorization to launch and operate its SpaceMobile non-geostationary satellite system in low Earth orbit. The shares rose 6% on the news, in line with SkylitAI's earlier projection of gains. x.com

AST SpaceMobile faces growing satellite-cellular competition beyond Starlink Mobile, which, per Starlink, agreed to acquire a nationwide US low-band spectrum portfolio. A later 5,105-satellite direct-to-cell system from Amazon tied to Globalstar is also a threat. AST's best chance is giving AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile a fighting chance against them; that reliable Starlink Mobile service is a long way off doesn't matter. x.com  x.com  x.com  x.com

AST SpaceMobile's Japan deal matters less for its $1B headline than for three structural advantages. Japan approved 700MHz band 28 for direct-to-device, and Rakuten is the only carrier holding it, so KDDI, Docomo and SoftBank cannot copy it. The joint venture owns the satellites, so government money buys BlueBirds and ground gear from AST as near-term equipment revenue. Sovereign-backed debt also answers the dilution bear case. Final approval is pending, with rules expected around September. … Show more

Anti-SpaceX demand could bring AST SpaceMobile and Amazon a lot of business. If Avery Sullivan's interpretation of AST's E-band filing as a push into consumer broadband is right, that would be huge for AST. x.com

AST SpaceMobile's economics remain unproven while its finances are strained by heavy capex, negative operating cash flow, rising debt and frequent stock issuance. The forecast opportunity is the only positive; Piper Sandler's cut to its target to $54 from $98 is significant. x.com

AST SpaceMobile's drone-connectivity opportunity now has enacted US 800 MHz access, while its direct-to-cell rollout has reached a Philippine demonstration. The FCC opened the cellular bands AST leases from AT&T and Verizon to airborne drone command, communications and payload use; AST also holds global MSS rights in those bands. Its Philippine filing names Smart Communications, with over 61 million subscribers, and a temporary 30-day demo permit, not permanent commercial service. x.com  x.com  … Show more
