Memory supply looks constrained through at least 2030 because HBM, vertical HBM and vertical edge-inference memory require more wafers per bit than standard DRAM. Memory makers should be valued on rising bit demand, not past price cycles, because AI has raised the industry's floor. Memory revenue is bits times price: price swings, but bit demand keeps compounding. The base case has 2030 conventional DRAM bit shipments at about 2.5 times 2026, with HBM near two-fifths of sector revenue. Memory remains structurally scarce because SK hynix says conventional DRAM and HBM are practically sold out through 2029, while customers request roughly twice the HBM volume it can produce. Micron's bet on 3D DRAM over rivals' 4F2 could give it an edge as AI memory demand rises. Micron expects shortages for at least two more years: HBM per GPU rose 3.6x from H100 to B300, inference memory per server doubled in three years, and agent context grows about 30x annually. It plans further 6F2 nodes, 1-delta DRAM in 2H27 and 400-plus-layer G11 NAND in 2027; processor-stacked vHBM is targeted around 2028. If Micron is right, rivals are spending on the wrong path. Micron's rising margins make it an easy political target and one of the biggest worries about buying it or other memory stocks. Gross margins have risen from about 30% to 86%; Apple is raising consumer-device prices, Intel PC demand is weak and Nvidia is scrapping consumer graphics products. Hynix's sold-out memory supply supports expectations for big numbers from Micron, still trading at 5x forward earnings. Hynix says its HBM and DRAM chips are sold out until 2029 and a chip shortage is likely to continue into 2030. Big numbers and capital return are expected after Micron reports in December. x.com
Micron's HBM and server-memory scarcity is backed by customer commitments beyond its earlier sold-out 2026 capacity. Per management and sell-side reports, more than about 75% of fiscal 2027 shipments are allocated or contracted, supply may not rebalance through 2028, and 2027 HBM prices have risen significantly. Strategic agreements extend through 2030; a later supply glut or faster Chinese competition could erode margins. x.com

3D-stacked DRAM could constrain bit output even more than today's HBM, preventing memory oversupply beyond 2030. HBM demand already diverts capacity from conventional DRAM; logic-integrated stacks could add pressure if they scale around 2029-30. That comparison depends on the architecture being understood correctly, and memory makers have not settled the DRAM process nodes. x.com
The memory sector is finished because China's CXMT has advanced a 4F² DRAM architecture that could greatly increase density. Micron, SanDisk and other memory-stock holders will bleed for months; China will lead AI moving forward, and those stocks are already paying the price. x.com
Micron's ordinary memory could see tighter supply because HBM consumes far more factory capacity than conventional DRAM. Meeting AI demand could thus extend Micron's opportunity beyond AI memory. x.com
