LightPath's path into laser counter-drone systems is more direct than assumed, though it is not yet a laser-weapons program win. Its investor materials list directed-energy weapon integration within C-UAS, with its IR cameras acting as the eyes that detect and track targets. Backlog rose from $37.4M to $110.6M, and it won an $11M follow-on C-UAS camera order. nLIGHT's price now assumes high-energy lasers will replace much of kinetic weapons and nLIGHT will be the main beneficiary; if either is wrong, downside is real. Being the laser leader is a reasonable bet, but an enormous laser TAM is less certain after talks with friends in defense. Drones and missiles can be countered many ways, and the US will likely use layered defense. At the right price it is attractive, and the upside may be underestimated. x.com 

Defense is the sector money is likely to rotate into heavily over the coming weeks and months, favoring nLIGHT and LightPath. Per @BlackScholesMan, the Iran war exposed serious shortfalls in Western defense that need to be plugged, and the money will follow. x.com 

The real chokepoint in air defense is the sensor, not the interceptor: blind the detection layer and the kill chain breaks, as Iran showed in the Gulf. RF detection is going obsolete because fiber-optic and autonomous drones emit nothing, so passive infrared is the answer, with Golden Dome as the funded response. LightPath supplies infrared sensing, Ondas offers drone and counter-drone platforms plus a LightPath stake, and Kraken Robotics applies the same logic undersea with sonar. x.com

LightPath Technologies trades at 6.3x FY2027 analyst revenue, half nLIGHT's 13x on essentially the same small-cap defense photonics setup. NDAA Section 834 requires the Pentagon to drop optical glass from China, Russia and others by 2030, and LightPath holds the only US chalcogenide glass licensed from the Naval Research Laboratory. Counter-drone defense is in its early stages, with much more deployment to come to protect critical infrastructure, and LightPath Technologies, MS International and Guerrilla RF are good ways to play it. Mikhail Khodorkovsky notes Ukrainian drones are hitting practically every major refinery in European Russia, with even the Moscow refinery not covered by air defense. x.com 

nLight has pivoted from industrial lasers to a lean, high-margin defense play, with high risk and high reward. It is a core winner in high-energy laser defense, where its HELSI-2 prototype-to-production work drove record FY2025 revenue of $261 million, up 31%. It raised about $200 million in February 2026 to expand aerospace and defense capacity, cutting reliance on the cyclical industrial market. x.com 

LightPath Technologies' 20% drop on the Army's delay of its Stinger replacement program is a huge overreaction. Reopening NGSRI to new bidders with a Spring 2027 demo pushes out a contract worth $50-100M a year if Lockheed wins, but it is none of current revenue or the $110M backlog. CEO Sam Rubin says Pentagon funding is coming in some form, and after its $820M loan to Performance Drone Works, the Pentagon said similar deals would follow. 75%+ of American drones carry LightPath optics. x.com
