Tesla's Cybercab likely faces a one-to-two-year certification delay, as NHTSA has ordered Tesla to explain by September 30 how it self-certified the robotaxis deployed in Austin, per @Sam_Badawi. That is how long certification took Zoox, and Cruise's Origin took so long that GM gave up. Launching publicly was a dumb strategy given FSD's terrible safety record and lack of public data. x.comÂ
Tesla is operationally weak even though the market may treat everything it touches as gold. Margins and deliveries are falling, its robotaxi system is not proven safe beyond a small area with heavy oversight, and it keeps settling FSD and Autopilot accident lawsuits. Against @realroseceline's view that Uber holders should fear Tesla robotaxis, the same argument was made against GM and other legacy automakers, whose profits are high and which have outperformed Tesla over about five years. x.comÂ
Tesla isn't a buy yet because the stock, at over 300x trailing earnings, already prices in Robotaxi success that Cybercab hasn't proven at scale. Cybercab began rides in Austin, but about 45 of roughly 420 Tesla autonomous vehicles in Texas only show the cars can run. Order volumes, intervention and accident rates and per-car profit are undisclosed, NHTSA is still reviewing safety, and Q2 operating margin was 1.4% with -$1.1B free cash flow. Repeated promises without timely delivery make Tesla and SpaceX unattractive to own. Roadster is years late, Tesla Semi mass production has been repeatedly delayed, Optimus and Cybercab deployment trails promises, and Mars colonization deadlines have slipped. Tesla's auto margins and profits are under pressure. Execution matters more than hype. x.comÂ
Tesla's low-cost, high-margin Cybercabs make its Robotaxi opportunity bigger than investors appreciate. ARK estimates each costs about $30K to make and generates $93K a year at roughly 68% gross margin; Tesla is not bullish enough in investors' eyes. Texas registrations show 1,080 Teslas, including 573 Cybercabs, versus 1,207 Waymos; these are registrations, not active rides. Musk's politics and conduct put Tesla's Cybercab program at risk. If Democrats win the midterms, he could be their first target and Cybercab could be shut down; the program is already under investigation for breaking NHTSA laws. Musk's conduct is the main reason Tesla has been flat for five years, and he often harms shareholders more than anyone else. x.comÂ

Tesla's Roadster stunt could hurt its credibility with institutional investors because it offers no evidence of a profitable, scalable robotaxi service. The prototype showed neither a flying car nor a car allowed on public streets. Tesla's robotaxi business will add little to 2027 revenue: even a near-miraculous fleet of 50,000 by end-2027 would bring only about $1 billion. Politicians will work to slow robotaxi adoption even after safety is undeniable, and each robotaxi needs a city license. Tesla's accelerating Cybercab registrations make a commercially significant fleet more plausible, which the market is starting to notice. The tracker shows 544 registered in Texas and 229 spotted on roads; an earlier snapshot counted 114 new registrations in a week and the first Dallas sighting. Tesla's robotaxi opportunity is smaller near term than the market priced in because the roughly $60B US ride-hailing market cannot justify the hype. 380,000 unsupervised Q2 miles prove the technology works, but a $300B+ market requires Americans to give up car ownership. Uber and Lyft cost about $2.40 a mile and Tesla's robotaxi about $2.00, versus under $0.80 for a private car.
