Meta and Apple are in a long-term race to build practical VR glasses that could break the iPhone's two-decade stranglehold in the 2030s. Meta started light and comfortable but must add orders of magnitude more power; Apple started with the powerful but bulky Vision Pro, essentially a prototype, and must shrink it. Meta is having its iPhone moment with Muse, while the market still sees a social media company overspending on AI. Muse is a personal assistant that can shop, book travel, schedule appointments and send emails, through its own app or inside WhatsApp, with Ray-Ban glasses next. Meta is one of the only companies with all the pieces, and Muse can sit on top of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads and the glasses. Meta's new Muse-integrated hardware is going to be pretty big. As @amitisinvesting notes, the event centered on devices tied to Muse, including glasses that could see wider adoption, plus 15+ new partner connectors. Himax's LCoS microdisplay leads on the size, weight and power that all-day AR glasses need, and possible links to Apple and Google aren't priced. It will show a 0.09cc, 0.2g, 350,000-nit spec at SID Display Week on May 6. Apple's incoming CEO John Ternus, a hardware engineer, may push sub-50g glasses, and a @hntrbrkmedia and @citrini report pointed to an Apple link. Sony's planned joint venture with TSMC should strengthen its global lead in image sensors. The two agreed to set up a Kumamoto venture with about ¥1 trillion of total investment, 60% owned by Sony, targeting mass production of next-generation sensors from 2029. It taps TSMC's advanced manufacturing for miniaturization and 3D stacking, as legacy sensor makers consolidate around cutting-edge fabs to stay competitive in AI and automotive, though capital intensity is rising. x.com 

Sony is interesting precisely because it is still trapped in a conglomerate discount while it simplifies its structure. @RogueWayve notes imaging and sensing is only 25% of profit and that a spinout would unlock real value; a spinout would probably unlock value faster, but the key question is whether the imaging and sensing business gets reclassified by the market before a clean spinout arrives. x.com
